Comic Book Study

Posted by Otto Robba in Concept Art on 09. Mar, 2010 | 1 Comment

I will be straightforward: I love comic books. That said, I have had this story laying around for a while and it is bugging me to get out. In order to practice and see what style would work for it, I started trying. This is one of the results.

I have no idea yet if this is the style I’m gonna go with for the comic book I intend to write but nevertheless, sketching, thinking, researching are all important parts in the process of creating.

Hand-Down

A group of sketches and studies I did on the subject of, well, hands ;) . Used mostly mine for the poses, although some I drew from photographs that were provided in art classes last year. Yes, the title is a silly pun – forgive me!

A Sketchy Subject

A small group of sketches and studies I did based on reference found on magazines and the internet and the Drawing School book.

Character Study

Posted by Otto Robba in Concept Art, Sketches & Studies on 08. Mar, 2010 | No Comments

Creating a character involves a series of steps. You need to research and sketch a lot, from poses to small details. It is just as important to have the character appearing in a pose that tells the public about her as it is important to have her wearing/using gear and apparel that makes sense. I included two pictures which take a look into a tiny part of the process I went through.

This one, the gorgon, was a simply sketch for an idea I had at the time, never went ahead of it and so it stayed like a mere sketch. I went through a lot of snake photographs and ‘deviant’ women before I sketched anything.

The savage is a piece I had actually put up in the site a while ago, as you can see. I went through the Tarzan movies, through photographs of extreme sports, checked Assassin’s Creed and went ahead to do the poses myself, taking photographs to use as a basis. Honestly, quite a bit of research before the final piece was actually done.

A design I made for a t-shirt contest at shirt.woot. Theme: ‘Birds’. Gotta love Snoopy and Dodos.

For me, art is all about communication, finding and giving meaning when most would not see. To make people feel from words unspoken, to imagine entire worlds through simple literary passages.

My dream is to be able to, should I ever be so lucky, create a piece of work that lives far beyond myself.
